Exploring the legend and reality of
Sir Charles Kingsford Smith

Charles Kingsford Smith was a national and international hero for his flying achievements. Think of today’s most famous celebrities and heroes and that was Smithy in his own day.

But what sort of a person was he? What were the characteristics and qualities that helped make him an Australian hero?

This activity, which is provided courtesy of the National Museum, Canberra, helps participants to find the real Smithy through a process of providing information ("sources") about him and then posing questions.

Working through the activity

This activity consists of 24 questions which are interspersed with information. Images are provided to help with assimilation of the information. The activity is completely self-contained within a single, Acrobat™ file  which is provided in three versions.

All that needs to be done is to download the chosen Acrobat™ file, use it as an electronic document, or print pages from it as required and distribute them to activity participants.

The versions are:

  • Biggest. A 21-page colour version which includes in-document hyperlinks to page-sized versions of images (useful if image detail needs to be examined) -- 4.44mb

  • Medium. An 8-page colour version which has the complete exercise but does not include page-size versions of images -- 900kb

  • Smallest. An 8-page monochrome production of the Medium version -- 493kb.
